Cortizo is present in the new headquarters of the CPS group



The new headquarters of the CPS group, located n the Technological and Scientific Park of Getafe was created by the architecture firm Touza Arquitectos, a firm which has designed more than 2000 projects along its forty years of existence. With Julio Touza Rodríguez leading the project, a modern and attractive design was sought to reflect the corporate identity of CPS: dynamism, innovation, transparency and technology. That was one of the premises. The other was building an “intelligent and eco-efficient building”, under bioclimatic criteria, destined to accommodate offices equipped with the latest technology in management of energy resources. The design, innovation and commitment with sustainability are concepts which are associated to the philosophy of CORTIZO. The Spanish leader in design of aluminium systems for architecture was chosen by Touza Arquitectos to provide solutions in enclosures. CORTIZO has put at the service of the firm, the collaboration of the R+D+I and Architecture and Engineering Departments to provide the necessary technical assistance to the project. 

A modular building regarded as a whole

The new headquarters of the CPS group covers a built area of 11 500 m².The building is regarded as a set of distinct pieces which connections allow a “impression of unity” of the whole. It is structured in two underground floors, ground floor and three upper floors.  Beneath the complex, in a sole basement, there are parking spaces for employees and for the facilities. When entering the courtyard under the ground level, this floor partially becomes a level with natural light and a privileged view of a small garden. The cafeteria has an exit to a terrace with a slight landscaped bank, which increases the “presence” of the building. The terrace is protected by the astonishing projection of the third floor which extends over the access, providing the main façade with a great beauty.  
The entrance to the complex is located perpendicularly to the main entrance, taking as visual reference the axis under the walkway of the two main blocks. Guests access through the western block, under the “door canopy” of the walkway that joins both buildings.  In buildings with a lot of movement of people it is also necessary to find an ideal door which meets the needs of maximum quality and safety. In this project, the Millenium Door 200 Plus system summarizes the both values, since it has been specially designed for this kind of use. On the inside of the building, the main hall has its own distinct entity due to a lobby at triple height, which communicates with the upper floors of offices.   

Touza Arquitectos has also paid special attention to the development of free areas, with extensive areas with trees and gardens, combined with a meticulous design of the lighting at night and layers of water. The access to surrounding buildings, which in addition to the main entrance also has an entrance for loading and unloading operations, makes it possible to reserve a back road , freeing the rest of the area from road traffic. 

Maximising the use of sunlight

The ideal orientation of the working spaces and the adaptation to the surroundings, are some of the hallmarks of this building. The architecture, in this case, is conditioned by the shape of the area and its location inside the urbanisation. However, its design is strategically uses the orientation of the façades and the layout of the inner courtyards, to favour the course of the sun and taking advantage of the airflow. All the offices have a double orientation, which ensures an ideal use of solar radiation. The outside façades are projected towards the north, from where they receive a diffuse and uniform light, perfect for the kind of R+D+I activities developed inside the building. Orientated towards the south, with a light that is more difficult to control and more unpleasant for working, is the most opaque part of the building.

The block devoted to offices is L-shaped with two arms, the largest of which has a trapezoidal shape to strengthen the corner. Between all three elements there are courtyards, stairs, lifts and toilets. These elements ensure an adequate relation between the pieces and provide attractive “”mediation areas” which ensure the permeability of the inside of the building. The open spaces, which are glazed, are specially characteristic in this building, transmitting the corporate values of the company.

The brightness in the inside of the building has much to do with the TPH 52 FAÇADE of CORTIZO. Touza Arquitectos chose this curtain wall with a concealed vertical gasket and a horizontal end plate. Compound by two sashes, the first on the framework, made opaline with serigraphy, and the second, transparent, for the viewing zone. In both cases the composition of the glass is 6/12/6, where the outside glass is 3+3 on the ground floor or in outside areas with danger of impact. The TPH 52 façade is a mixed system, with a seen indoors section of 52 mm, which arises from the combination of the TP 52 and the SG 52. This system still holds the coupling pressure profile-end plate in the horizontal gaskets, emphasising the shape, whereas the fixation of the glass is done with clips and the U-profile on the horizontal edges. There are different possibilities of end plates: H-shaped, elliptical and rectangular. The mounted mullions and transoms and at different levels allow waterfall drainage, along with pipettes and continuity pieces, ensure the total watertightness, drainage and the evacuation of the enclosure.   

We must not forget that one of the bases of the project of Julio Touza Sacristán was the construction of an “eco-efficient building”. The large Thermal Break area of the TPH 52 façade which can reach 30 mm has contributed to this. Together with the large glazing capacity up to 44 mm, with glass compositions of great thickness and energy efficient have provided an excellent thermal and acoustic performance.   

Also, it is worth noting the maximum performances of this curtain wall, which has obtained excellent results on the AEV test bench and was awarded with the CWCT Certification in accordance with the British regulations.  

In the new headquarters of the CPS group, aesthetic and luminosity are also possible with the COR 70 Hidden Sash CC16 RPT of CORTIZO, with a seen profile section of 70 mm  and a maximum glazing surface which can reach 85% of glass in the total area of the window. With these features we ensure maximising the use of natural light and obtaining a perfect uniformity with the aesthetic of the façade. All this reinforced by the maximum energy efficiency (window transmittance from 1,2 W/m²K) and superb classifications in AEV tests: permeability(4), watertightness (E1500), and windload (C5). 


Bioclimatic endowments and energy saving 

In this commitment with sustainability and environment protection, Touza Arquitectos sought for different solutions to achieve a high energy efficiency and thermal comfort in the building. Based on an “ecological architecture” and respectful with the environment, they proposed using materials which spend their cycle of life without almost generating any emissions, like in the case of aluminum. The CORTIZO enclosures present in this project meet this need The façades, doors and windows ensure a higher thermal insulation and an optimal energy saving.    
The use of geothermal energy, the use of lighting elements with photovoltaic micro panels or taking advantage of the benefits of the vegetation at a bioclimatic level, are other solutions Touza Arquitectos included in the headquarters of the CPS group, seeking for an ecologically sustainable project.
